It’s been a while since I did one of these, about a year actually. I generally listen to at least a few songs every day, driving to school or waiting between classes and what have you, tho some days are more packed than others, like when I’m working from home and such. About 10,000 songs in a year, average 28 songs per day, that’s alright.

Some new artists include Leona Lewis, PUFFY, BAReeeeeeeeeeN, Mr.Children, 4minute… I haven’t been keeping up with a lot of artists or seeking out anything too new as of late, but I hope to get back into exploring some more in the future.

It was a little over two years ago, October 2007, that I really started getting into Japanese music. Interestingly at the time, I recall while riding home from a conference in Chicago, making mention that I don’t really listen to music. For the most part, I had never put any effort into it. I mean, I liked music in general, a variety of genres, but never went out of my way to listen to any of it. In those two years however, I’d say it’s become a big part of my life; and even then, perhaps that’s a bit of an understatement, hmm.

It started with me downloading music videos from YouTube. I can’t pinpoint what it is that got me seeking out these videos in the first place. It might have been the anime I had been watching through the summer which had just ended, Tengan Toppa Gurren Laggan. Nakagawa Shouko did the opening, and it’s one of the first songs I grabbed. I’ve mentioned on my site before that I stumbled upon some catchy J-Pop in 2002, but at the time it didn’t stick. This time around however, it really stuck. Berryz Koubou in particular, stuck pretty hard.

I began seeking out blogs that discuss this type of music, which lead me to a couple that focused mostly on Japanese music, but also other topics that pertain to the idol fandom; from there, exploring their blogrolls, I found a great many more to keep my interest. It was fun reading about others’ opinions and experiences with the music, the idols. It motivated me to seek out more and more blogs and artists. It was all new to me and I was glad that there were a lot of resources out there for me to look to.

In early December of 2007 I started buying a bunch of tracks off of iTunes Japan. Angela Aki, Amuro Namie, Berryz Koubou, CHERRY LYDER, Nakagawa Shouko and Tokyo Jihen were some of my first purchases. I enjoyed burning CDs and shuffling them in my car. Simple stuff right, but I really hadn’t done anything like that before. Listening to music was never my thing, but I was having fun with this. In February of 2008 I decided to create my own blog related to Japanese music. While I haven’t been the most interesting, frequent or lengthy writer, I’ve enjoyed doing it.

I continued to build my music library, adding Abe Natsumi, Buono!, Canary Club, C-ute, Goto Maki, Matsuura Aya, Morning Musume, Ongaku Gatas, Shiina Ringo, THE Possible, and more. Tho it wasn’t until Berryz Koubou’s first single last year that I actually bought my first CD. Dschinghis Khan wowed me. Well, Chinami was a big part of that. The video was so fun, the song was catchy, and I just loved it. By this time I was already fascinated with this idol pop genre. Watching concerts, their little variety shows and the like, above and beyond the music, there was so much fun and cuteness to keep me entertained.

Random Chinami Stuff

More purchases would follow, including my first bunch of photosets. It was kind of weird buying Berryz Koubou and C-ute’s photos. I mean, what was the point of collecting these photos, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them exactly. When I go them however, I was so happy to just have and look at them. I can’t explain it really. There were never any celebrities or the like that I had any sort of vested interest in before, but these girls grabbed my undivided attention. The photos made me feel connected in some sense. I used to not get the obsession and exuberant interest that other people saw in “celebrities,” but now, I had fallen into it.

Random Berryz Stuff

Over the next year and some, my musical interest would continue to grow to other Japanese artists and to this day it is ever expanding. I’d buy a lot more songs and a lot more photos, some photobooks, posters, a bunch of stuff, the music, the culture had become a big part of my daily life. I’ve participated in forums and chat rooms, and have contributed to other blogs in an attempt to help spread the J-Music goodness to the masses. In addition, I’ve started learning Japanese in college and am looking to pursue the language and culture so much more. During my brief time in school thus far, I’ve actually had the opportunity to write a few successful essays and do a couple lengthy presentations on the subject of being a wota. It’s great being able to share not only with those who do know a bit about what it means to be a wota, but also with those who have no idea of the subculture.

This past summer I went to Japan for the first time. I hadn’t planned on doing anything as it pertains to music, but it turned out that there would be something going on at the same time I was there. Champloo was definitely the most fun experience I had ever had at the time.

Berryz Tattoo (Drawing by Chinami :P)

When I got back from Japan, I decided to get a tattoo. Well, I had been thinking about it for a while, but with the recent experience, I decided to go through with it. So, I had “Berryz” tattooed on my chest along with a design that Chinami had drawn in the past. It was strategically placed, over my heart. Cheesy, maybe, but it’s a representation of the love I have for Japanese culture, Japanese music and more specifically, Berryz Koubou and how much it all has literally changed my life. It’s hard to express how much it all means to me, try as I might, but even then I feel that words really cannot convey how much I love this stuff.

More recently, towards the end of November, I went to Japan for a few days. For what? Well to see Berryz in concert of course. Or really, it’s because Chinami got a solo, and I wanted to be there to see it. Medachitai!! Another great concert experience. Honestly, the best experience of my life. Sitting front and center, to wave and smile and to have the girls wave and smile back at me, epic.

I Want To Stand Out

Now why am I sharing all of this exactly. Is it to show how much of a fan I am? Am I trying to stand out above the crowd? Am I trying to be different (just like everybody else)?

Well, not really. It’s just me sharing my experiences, sharing something that I love with everyone. As I started into the J-Music scene, I enjoyed reading about others experiences, their journeys into wotadom, their praise and criticisms of something they too felt passionate about. Maybe someone will get the same out of my writing. But even if that is not the case, I’m doing it because it’s fun, because I enjoy talking about it. Sure, there is a little bit of me that wants to stand out, but that’s not even remotely the core of why I do it I don’t think, or why it all interests me in the first place.

Really, It’s Okay

((I have to keep telling myself that it seems, lol)). So the thousands of dollars I’ve spent on all of this stuff over the past few years might seem a bit obsessive. I’d say that yes, it is an obsession to some extent. While my interest doesn’t lie exclusivity with the bubbly pop of 13-18 year old Japanese girls, I realize that some might find the interest in general as being a little weird; but I love being a wota. It’s a big part of who I am now, I love just being able to be myself. I’m glad to have found something to be passionate about, no matter how out of the ordinary it may be.

Now, with all that said, I’m aware that I didn’t exactly define what a “Wota” is. I think tho, that I’ll let the post speak for itself. I’ll let others make up their minds on what it means, to me anyway, based on the context of my experiences.

It’s been almost a year since misa put up the questions asking the community about our J-Music tastes. Now, she’s asking again. While some of my responses have stayed the same, I figured they’ve changed enough to give it a go again.

1. What was the first Japanese song that you ever listened to?
Back in 2002, Momoiro Kataomoi by Mattsura Aya.

Momoiro Kataomoi

2. Did it inspire you to like that group/singer, or did it turn you away?
I wasn’t really into any type of music at the time. I was probably looking for cute Japanese stuff or something (-_-);, and happened to stumble upon the adorable and bubbly video. While I wasn’t inspired, it didn’t turn me away either. Years after the initial find, I rediscovered H!P and was greatly surprised to find Aya had sung the song. I remembered the catchy tune immediatly and I’d say that Aya has been a favorite of mine for a while, partly because of that.

Gag 100kaibun Aishite Kudasai

3. What is the one song that you have been listening to for the longest time?
Gag 100kaibun Aishite Kudasai gets credit for this one. I think I’ve mentioned this a quite a few times in various ways, but the opening melody grabbed me and I was hooked. Chinami killed me with her cuteness and the whole thing was an eye opening experience of sorts.

4. What group/singer have you liked the longest?
I guess there’s a bit of a tie between Tokyo Jihen, CHERRY LYDER, Berryz Koubou, Nakagawa Shouko, Angela Aki… but again, I’ll give this one to Berryz. They’ve been there since my intro into J-Pop.

Killer Tune

5. What is the song with the most plays on your itunes/media player?
Killer Tune by Tokyo Jihen at 252 plays has a pretty good lead over CHERRY LYDER’s NAMUKIN Girl and Omae wa Ushi ka!? which sit at 234 each.

6. Is that song your favorite?
It’s definently in my top picks, but I wouldn’t call it my favorite.

Rottara Rottara

7. If not, what is?
If I had to pick just one, I’d go with Rottara Rottara by Buono!. Buono! is awesome, the song is awesome, the awesome is awesome, awesome Buono! is awesome… sorry. There are a couple more that I’d say are favs (One’s LIFE by °C-ute, Kirin no Kubi Yori Nagaku Naru by CHERRY LYDER, Gunjou Biyori by Tokyo Jihen, Minna no Ki by Tomoiki Ki o Uetai) and then even more that I’d rate very highly.

8. Is there any one group that you can listen to all/most of the songs by? If so, who?

Kirin no Kubi Yori Nagaku Naru

CHERRY LYDER has a discography of 11 unique tracks, and I enjoy them all. She’s fun pop rocky, and can slow it down too. Then there’s Buono!, and well, they’re awesome. There are some songs that I like more than others but overall their stuff is tops.

9. What is your favorite agency?
Still don’t know, or care(?) about agencies all that much. Still, I’ll go with Up-Front Works cause they contain both Berryz Koubou and Buono!.

10. What is your favorite group/singer?
Berryz Koubou of course. So much to love. The girls are fun and the music is great.

Hot off the presses, the Judy and Mary 15th Anniversary Tribute Album, released March 18, 2009, was pretty awesome. Just as I had hoped. I really need to go back over the Judy and Mary discography, as so far I’ve fund some pretty cool stuff. I’ll keep this brief, but there are a few tracks that I wanted to give specific mention too.

The album starts off with Ikimono Gakari covering Classic. Ikimono Gakar’s sound is all over this one including their signature harmonica. One spot actually plays a bit like Kimagure ROMANTIC, intentionally I’m sure. Those little bits, plus an ever so slightly updated sound make this cover a really enjoyable one.

mihimaru GT takes a stab at Over Drive, and they do a great job. Thing’s start off simple and pick up a few more interesting sounds as things go on. True to form, mihimaru GT mixes in a little bit of their Hip-Hop thing. mihimaru GT is a group that I’ve heard about for quite a while, but have never looked much into their music. I’ll definitely be checking them out in more detail in the future.

The third track I’d like to mention is Lucky Pool, covered by HALCALI. I like HALCALI’s style and this song is another one where the group takes the original and adds just enough to make it their own. HALCALI of course, interjects a lil rap. It’s the same old song, but different enough that it’s fresh and new. Well, both versions are fairly new to me, but you get the point.

Ai Otsuka, HALCALI, Ikimono Gakari, Kimura Kaela, Midori, mihimaru GT, Nakagawa Shouko, Okuda Tamio, PUFFY, SCANDAL, school food punishment, SHIGI, SUNEOHAIR, Takeshi Hanzawa… whether or not you’re familiar with any one of the artists, I really recommend you check out this album. There’s not one track on here that I didn’t like to some extent.

After glancing over the questions for this months Wota Wonderings, I quickly came up with the response “No.” But well, that wasn’t going to cut it…

Tie-Ins

The music industry has had many tie-ins with animes and doramas. Of those tie-ins, did one manage to capture your interest and get you hooked on their music? Or, did one manage to change your perspective of a musical act? Did you end up watching the anime or dorama in its entirety or give up once the musical act’s tie-in ceased?

So how’s that formula work out anyway. I had to ponder that for only a short while. The type of tie-in I was thinking about was an artist promoting a product for an anime or a drama. That is, rather than promoting the anime directly. The product in this case however, is the artist/song themselves. A bit quick to jump to the response of no, it didn’t take too long to come up with one of the biggest artist tie-ins that’s grabbed me.

Shokotan as Yoko from Gurren Lagann

Nakagawa Shouko did the opening to the epic anime, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. This was literally right around the time I started getting into Japanese music. Shokotan could be considered a product herself, being sold as a gravure idol, actress, singer, illustrator and then some. And as she is a self proclaimed otaku, she fits right into the genre. I have to stay, I love it; I am definitely hooked on Shokotan.

Sorario Days, the opening theme to Gurren Lagann, was only my first introduction to Shouko, but the tie-ins didn’t end there. More recently, she also did the theme song for the Gurren Lagan movie. Both were hits from my standpoint. Her discography is filled with this stuff and generally speaking, it’s all pretty good. Of note was her single Shiny Gate, which was used as a theme song for Tokyo OnlyPic 2008. That’s a seemingly huge tie-in, tho I don’t think it received much fanfare.

Another example tie-in that has kept me hooked on their music, is D-51 and One Piece. Their song, Brand New World, was a nice upbeat song used as the 6th opening and coincided with an awesome point in the amine. It wasn’t played for long, but it really stuck.

Then’s actually a laundry list of artists I discovered through tie-ins or are otherwise attached, each with varying degrees of replay value. Ai Otsuka with Hanazakari no Kimitachi e; Buono! and Shugo Chara Egg, Shugo Chara!; Diggy-Mo’ and Nishino Kana, Soul Eater; Ikimono Gakari and nobodyknows+, Naruto; Kusumi Koharu and MilkyWay, Kirarin Revolution. I’m sure there are many others I’ve enjoyed listing to as well. Actually, looking into this, it’s a little bit surprising but I guess it was inevitable, all part of the discovery process.

Of the anime/doramas listed, only Shugo Chara! and Kirarin Revolution have dropped in interest. It’s a case of enjoying the music, but not having interested in the thing it’s used to promote. I’m a ways into Shugo Chara! but it’s gotten somewhat repetative. I’ve not seen Kirarin Revolution at all, but from the snippits, I don’t think it’s something I’m too interested in seeing anyway. I’m glad the groups are there tho, even if in my case, they’re not really working fully for their intended purpose.

Have there been any CM tie-ins that had a similar effect on you?

Not to the same extent as the others mentioned, but Namie Amuro’s tie into Vidal Sassoon with 60s 70s 80s was a great tie-in. I had already been familiar with her work by the time this was released. This little campaign rekindled my interest a bit after the relatively long break after she released her album, Play. I still follow her today, but it’s not as enthusiastically as I perhaps once would have.

Being newish to the Japanese music scene, I’ll admit that I’m not as familiar with Judy and Mary as some others may be. So while I may not be the best judge of how awesome this could turn out to be, I am looking forward to an upcoming tribute album, to be released on March 18.

Reading up on their history and seeing some of the tunes they’ve produced, things did begin to click in my head and perhaps a few bits of familiarity as well. What I’ll say tho, is that I’m most excited about is the list of artists who are giving this a go.

Ikimono Gakari – Classic

Ai Otsuka – LOVER SOUL

Okuda Tamio – Sanpomichi

Kimura Kaela – Happy?

SHIGI – KYOTO

SCANDAL - DAYDREAM

school food punishment – Brand New Wave Upper Ground

SUNEOHAIR – Chiisa na Koro kara

Nakagawa Shouko – Sobakasu

PUFFY – motto

HALCALI – Lucky Pool

Takeshi Hanzawa (FreeTEMPO) – RADIO

Magokoro Brothers – Doki Doki

Midori – Music Fighter

mihimaru GT – Over Drive

15 artists for 15 years; a great line up, ne? Nakagawa Shouko had previously covered an opening theme from Rurouni Kenshin with 1/2, which I loved. She’s at it again similarly with Sobakasu, which I’ll definitely be looking forward to. Being familiar with a big chunk of the artists on the list is what’s really got me anticipating this, plus from my limited listening, Judy and Mary’s overall sound is great.

Hmm, so far it doesn’t look like I’m going to get my wish of fewer cover songs this year. Ah well, at least they’re breaking the resolution early and who am I to complain.

Thanks for the tip Henkka; via Tokyograph and natalie news.

Welcome to Wota Wonderings! We are a group of english-speaking Japanese music bloggers brought together once a month to answer questions posed by johpan. We strive to be creative and entertaining, and we may even shed a bit of new light on interesting musical and cultural topics. Any questions about how we work should be directed to johpan. Don’t forget to check out the other posts from this month at the bottom of this post. Enjoy!

New Year’s Resolutions

If you were someone in the Japanese music industry who could influence a change, what would your New Year’s resolution be?

So over winter break I was having a good long chat with my buddy JMI. Jamie, as she likes to be called, is a big time player in the Japanese music industry, heck you could even say that she is the Japanese music industry, from a female pop vocalist’s perspective anyway. In any case, I rarely get to talk to her anymore since she’s becoming so popular over in Japan and around the world really, so I was glad that were able to both find a little down time to reflect on the past and coming years.

At one point in our reminiscing, Jamie and I switched gears and began rattling off a list of resolutions that we’d like to stick to for the coming year. You know, loose a little weight, kicking off an image change, looking to the future and blah blah blah. We had been batting around quite a few ideas but one of hers really stuck out for me. Jamie was somewhat disappointed with some of her performances over the last year or so. Specifically, she has been releasing a lot of cover songs lately and felt that she was lacking in originality, she wasn’t singing her own voice so to speak.

On that point, I countered by admitting that covers can be fun, but in the end realized that I too was ready to move on. While we must always remember where we started, we must also push forward with great innovation. If I were in Jamie’s shoes, I’d probably have the same feeling. I mean, the list of covers wasn’t too grandiose, but a lot of other Japanese artists had released cover songs too.

WTF was that!?

Berryz Koubou – They released Dchingus Khan and then they had the nerve to offer up a crakafied remix. Well, I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy it and it was kinda unique turn in the H!PSphere at the time. One has to admit tho that covering an old German Pop band is a bit odd.

°C-ute – Edo no Temari Uta II didn’t feel too much like a cover really, but I guess it is what it is. Popifying an Enka song coud work I guess, but I didn’t really like the song too much.

GO!GO!7188 – Released a mini cover album, Tora no Ana 2, a sequel to Tora no Ana which they had released some time ago. There were a couple of songs that they totally made their own, while other songs were done a little bit of a disservice.

Anime songs desu.

Nakagawa Shouko – Another one with a mini album of nothing but covers. Released in late 2007, but it does kinda fit Shokotan’s style. Anime covers for a Seiyuu and otaku works.

Morning Musume – Pepper Keibu as a single, all right cool; it seems like Hello!Project was on a thing with each of the Wonderful Hearts releasing a cover song. Then they come out with an entire album devoted to covers… Morning Musume didn’t release a lot this year and what they did release was a bunch of covers. I’m not much of a MM fan anyway, and really wasn’t too impressed by it all. It may be an underappreciation of the source material, or rather a sort of ignorance.

We will remember you, always?

v-u-den – Their last song was a cover, for shame. I mean really, they should have gone out with something original, something that we would truly remember them by. Top top it off, it was a cover of a Morning Musume song, so nothing overly unique. Maybe there was some sort of significance in it all that just went over my head.

I’m sure there were a lot more out there. And again, while covers aren’t neccicarily a bad thing and can often produce entertaining results, Jamie and I both agreed that it’d be a good idea to cut back on them. We’ll see how things go, but I’m really rooting for Jamie to stick to her resolutions this year.

So many releases coming through to start up 2009, and Shokotan kicks it off right. Her second album, Magic Time, was released on January 1, 2009 and features seven new tracks and [another] Sorairo Days remix.

She continues to come up with more rockish sounding songs, which I really enjoy. While at the same time, she’s still keeping true to the poppy stuff her long time fans will like. Perhaps there’s not really distinction anymore, but I have read some reviewers who don’t like this shift, whereas others just don’t care for the happy go lucky stuff.

Of the new songs, Spiral and Ivy were the tops for me. Spiral has a nice mix of guitar and pop. It feels as if could have been used as an anime opening, game theme song or the like, which Shokotan is somewhat known for. Ivy features a do wop type of swing that transitions in a nifty kazoo tune at the end. It’s just fun without being overly so.

The Sariro Days mix isn’t anything special this time around. Where the last mix was a totally redone with 8 bit goodness, this one seems a to be a step back from the original. It’s kind of a mix of Tsuzuku Sekai and Sorairo, but it’s just lacking energy and variety on the instrumental side or something. That said, it doesn’t detract from the general quality of the album and is one of the better tracks included.

Overall I really liked the album and am definitely looking forward to following Shokotan this year. That’s both in the musical sense, and in whatever modeling, acting and other promotional spots she has lined up. She always seems to have something interesting going on.
